چکیده

Fear of strangers is a developmental milestone in childhood that encompasses behavioral inhibition and decreased novelty seeking. Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often exhibit fearless and impulsive behaviors, similar to those observed in children with atypically low levels of stranger fear. It is currently unknown whether these behaviors share common underlying biological mechanisms. Polymorphisms in the dopamine receptor 4 gene (DRD4) have been implicated in the risk for developing ADHD symptoms in childhood. Here we investigate whether (1) DRD4 variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) are associated with both stranger fear and ADHD symptoms, and (2) stranger fear in preschoolers mediates the link between DRD4 VNTRs and ADHD in later childhood. Stranger fear was observed in a large sample (N = 589) of 3-year-old Caucasian children and ADHD symptoms were assessed by a validated, mother-rated questionnaire at 6 years. We found evidence that longer DRD4 variants were associated with increased ADHD symptoms at 6 years, and that this relationship was partially mediated by lower levels of observed stranger fear at 3 years. Our results suggest a common underlying neurobiological mechanism in the association between low stranger fear and ADHD symptoms; variation in DRD4 may be an important contributor to this mechanism. 23 DRD4 VNTRs, Observed Stranger Fear in Preschoolers and Later ADHD Symptoms |

Role of Epigenetics in Biology and Human Diseases

For a long time, scientists have tried to describe disorders just by genetic or environmental factors. However, the role of epigenetics in human diseases has been considered from a half of century ago. In the last decade, this subject has attracted many interests, especially in complicated disorders such as behavior plasticity, memory, cancer, autoimmune disease, and addiction as well as neurod...

Effect of an Integrated Training Program on the Mothers of Children With Eating Problems

Introduction: A ppropriate nutrition is a major health objective in children’s early years. Eating problems among children as well as low awareness and the unsuitable function of mothers in this regard could result in complications for children and their families. Objective: We aimed to determine the effect of an integrated training on the mothers of 1- to 3-year-old children with eating probl...

Caregivers’ Perspective About the Levels of Sensory Processing Problems in Children With Autism

Background: Children with autism should interact and get along with their surrounding environment. Therefore, the researchers must try to explain the reasons of challenges in their adaptive behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate levels of challenges in sensory processing and the motor domain of adaptive behavior among children with autism in Egypt, and to explore the effect of sensory processi...

The Moderating Role of Genetics: The Effect of Length of Hospitalization on Children’s Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors

The study considered individual differences in children's ability to adjust to hospitalization and found the length of hospitalization to be related to adaptive psychological functioning for some children. Applying the theoretical framework of three competing models of gene-X-environment interactions (diathesis-stress, differential susceptibility, and vantage sensitivity), the study examined th...
